Tip 2: Search for loci or genes and define regions

First we search for the MYC gene by entering "myc" in box 1 and pressing enter. Now we create a new region around the MYC gene by first pressing button 2 and then clicking a left (3) and right (4) boundary. IGV lets us know the region has been created by affixing a solid red bar under the genomic coordinate axis.

Tip 3: Sort samples by amplification magnitude in a region

We've defined a region around the gene CDKN2A. Now we can sort all of our samples based on data only in this region. First, right click the red bar (1) and then choose Sorty by amplification (2).

Tip 4: Filter samples by metadata columns

If you've downloaded the All cancers data, you may find it useful to filter your samples down to a small subset of tumor types. To do this, click the Filter (1) menu and select Filter Tracks... (2). If you wish to match multiple tumor types in a logical OR fashion, click Match any of the following (3). Now you may filter samples by their metadata. In line 4, we select only melanoma samples and then add an additional line to allow breast samples. We can add as many filter rules as we'd like by clicking the + sign (5).
